How Long Until Teams Shows Away? The Away Timer Explained
Updated 2026-10-14 · 5 min read · NotAway
Teams shows you Away after a few minutes without keyboard or mouse input on your computer, usually about five. Locking the screen or leaving the phone app makes you Away straight away, and a sleeping computer goes Offline. You cannot change the idle delay in Teams. What you can change are the things that trigger it.
This guide lists each delay, explains why older guides say the timer can be changed, and covers what to adjust instead.
How long until Teams shows Away? Every delay
The Away timer is not one number. Each thing that changes your status runs on its own clock:
| What happens | Status | How long |
|---|---|---|
| No keyboard or mouse input on the computer | Away | A few minutes, usually about 5 |
| Screen locked | Away | Straight away |
| Computer asleep, shut down or offline | Offline | Within a few minutes |
| Teams phone app sent to the background | Away | Straight away |
| Away or Be right back chosen by hand | That status | 7 days, unless you set a duration |
| Available chosen by hand | Available | Until the next idle, lock or sleep |
| Outlook automatic replies on | Out of office | Until you turn them off |
Microsoft's presence documentation describes these states but only says “a few minutes” for idle. Five is what most people see on the desktop app; the web app and different versions can vary a little. After you come back, Teams normally turns you green again within seconds of your first input.
During a call or meeting Teams shows In a call or In a meeting rather than Away, even if you do not touch the keyboard. That is why people often go yellow the moment a long call ends.
Can you change the Away time in Teams?
No. Teams has no setting for how long it waits before Away, and Microsoft documents no admin policy that changes it either. Choosing a Duration in the status menu only controls how long a status you pick by hand lasts; it does not stop Teams calculating Away from inactivity.
Older guides say otherwise because Skype for Business, which Teams replaced, did have a setting for how many minutes of inactivity before showing Away. That option did not carry over to Teams. If a page tells you to open Settings and change the Away timer, it is describing Skype for Business.
What you can adjust instead
Since the idle delay is fixed, work on what sets it off:
- Lock timers. If your screen locks after 2 minutes, you go Away after 2 minutes, not 5. On Windows check Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options (including Dynamic lock) and the screen saver settings; on a Mac check System Settings > Lock Screen. On a work device these are often set by IT.
- Sleep timers. Longer sleep settings keep you from going Offline. They do not stop idle Away.
- Your phone. When you use several devices, the one you used most recently decides your status. A phone with Teams in the background can make you Away early.
- Manual statuses. Set a duration when you choose Away or Be right back, so it does not quietly last a week.
- A tool that adds input or holds the session. A mouse jiggler resets the idle timer while the computer is on and unlocked; a cloud service keeps Teams active even when it is not. Our comparison of ways to keep Teams green covers each one.
Away vs Offline vs Appear away
- Away (yellow clock) means Teams is running but has seen no activity, or the screen is locked. Messages still arrive.
- Offline (grey) means Teams is not connected on any device, for example because the computer is asleep. Messages wait until you sign back in.
- Appear away and Appear offline are statuses you choose yourself. They look the same to coworkers but you are still connected and receiving messages.

Quick answers
How long does Teams take to show Away?
A few minutes of inactivity, usually about five, on a computer. Immediately when you lock the screen or leave the phone app.
Can I set Teams to never show Away?
Not with a Teams setting. You need real activity on the device, the phone app open in the foreground, or a cloud service that holds your presence.
Why did I go Away after 1 minute?
Almost always a lock: a short screen saver with sign-in, Dynamic lock, or a company lock policy. Teams' own idle delay is longer than that.
Is the Away timer the same as Slack's?
No. Slack waits about 10 minutes. If you use both, see our guide to keeping Slack active.
