How to Keep Teams Status Green and Active: Methods Compared
Updated 2026-10-08 · 5 min read · NotAway
Teams turns your status Away when your computer is idle for a few minutes or locked, and Offline when it sleeps. To keep your Teams status green, you need one of three things: a computer that stays awake and sees input, the Teams phone app open in the foreground, or a cloud service that holds your presence for you. Choosing Available by hand fixes a wrong status, but it does not stop the next idle timeout.
Below is what each method does, what it needs and where it stops working. This page compares documented behavior; it is not a long-term reliability test of every tool.
How to keep your Teams status green: methods compared
The key question is whether the method needs your computer to keep running. A browser tab or extension still runs on your device; only a server-side service keeps working with your laptop closed.
| Method | What it does | Works with computer off? |
|---|---|---|
| Select Available | Fixes a manual Away. The next idle timeout still turns you Away. | No |
| Keep-awake tool or power settings | Stops sleep, so you avoid Offline. Most do not stop the idle Away. | No |
| Mouse jiggler (software or USB) | Sends real or simulated input, so Teams sees activity. | No |
| Teams phone app | Green only while the app is open in the foreground. | Phone only |
| Cloud presence service | Holds a Teams session from a server on a schedule. | Yes, where your account is supported |
Can I set Teams to Available permanently?
No. Microsoft's presence documentation says you can manually pick only a status that is less available than the one Teams calculates. Once Teams calculates Away from inactivity, choosing Available cannot override it.
To reset a manual status: select your profile picture at the top right of Teams, select your current status and choose Available. Choosing Duration in the same menu sets how long a manual status lasts. Without a duration, a manual status such as Away or Be right back stays for 7 days, which is a common reason for being “stuck” Away.
A custom status message (“Reading a document, messages welcome”) tells coworkers you are reachable, but it does not change the dot.
Can I stay active on Teams without moving my mouse?
Yes, if your computer keeps running. Two kinds of tools are often confused, and they solve different problems:
- Keep-awake tools stop sleep. Examples are Microsoft PowerToys Awake on Windows, and Amphetamine or the built-in
caffeinatecommand on Mac. They keep you from going Offline. Most send no input, so Teams can still show Away after a few idle minutes. - Mouse jigglers create input. Software jigglers move the pointer or press a key nobody uses; a USB jiggler is a small device the computer treats as a mouse. Because Teams sees activity, you stay green while the computer is on and unlocked.
To delay sleep without extra software: on Windows 11 open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep; on a Mac open System Settings > Lock Screen and the Battery options. On a work device, leave lock policies set by your organization in place and check its rules before using any jiggler.
If you only go Away during quiet reading, you may be seeing normal idle behavior rather than a bug. Our Teams Away troubleshooting guide helps tell the two apart.
What about a locked or closed laptop?
Microsoft says presence becomes Away when the computer is locked and Offline when it goes to sleep. A jiggler cannot change either one: a locked screen is Away even with input, and a closed or sleeping laptop runs nothing. If you need laptop-off operation, you need a cloud service. Check the result from another person's account, not your own screen.
Does the Teams phone app keep me green?
Only while you use it. Microsoft says mobile presence becomes Away as soon as the app goes to the background. Leaving Teams installed, or getting notifications, does not keep you green. If you are signed in on several devices, the one you used most recently decides your status.
Can Teams stay green with your laptop off?
Only through a cloud presence service. These services keep a Teams session open from their own servers on a schedule you set, so your laptop can be closed. A few paid services offer this today, at prices from about $4 to $9 a month. Account support differs widely, especially for work and school accounts.
Before choosing a service, check:
- Account support: personal and work/school accounts have different sign-in and security rules; some work accounts are not supported at all.
- Session renewal: how often you need to reconnect, and how the service tells you.
- Other statuses: what happens during calls, meetings, manual Away and Do not disturb.
- Stopping: whether the schedule end, pause and disconnect behave as promised, checked from another account.
- Account access: what credentials are stored and how to revoke the connection. A session token is still a credential, even when no password is collected.
Running in the cloud does not mean your administrators cannot see the session, or that your organization allows it.
Which method should you use?
- Wrong status while you are actively working: troubleshoot first; it is not a jiggler problem.
- Quiet work at a running computer: a keep-awake tool stops Offline; a jiggler also stops Away.
- Away from your desk on your phone: keep the Teams app open in the foreground.
- On a schedule with your laptop closed: a cloud service that supports your account type.
NotAway's Teams service is not available to connect yet. The waitlist reserves a first-month-free launch offer; it does not start a paid subscription or guarantee support for your account.
