How to Stop Teams Showing Away While You're Working

If Teams shows Away while you are working, first check whether your computer is idle or locked, whether Away was selected manually, and whether another device is affecting your presence. Being productive is not the same as generating the activity signals Teams uses. Reading a paper document, for example, may not produce any device activity.

If Teams stays Away after you resume using it, that is a different problem from a normal idle transition. Use the checks below to narrow down the cause before installing a tool or paying for a service.

1. Separate normal idle behavior from a stuck status

Open Teams, use it normally and check your profile's presence indicator. If possible, ask a coworker or use a second authorized account to check what others see. Your own menu selection and another person's observed status are not always updated at the same moment.

Microsoft documents automatic Away after inactivity or locking on a computer, and Offline after sleep. On mobile, moving the app to the background affects presence. Microsoft only says “a few minutes”; many people notice it at about five, but it varies by client.

Symptoms and the first check to make
What you seeFirst check
Away during quiet readingDevice inactivity; the work may not create an input signal.
Away after lockingExpected lock behavior, not necessarily a broken connection.
Away while actively using TeamsManual status, other sessions and a stale connection.
Away for days, or since you chose itA manual status that has not expired (7 days by default).
Purple Out of officeOutlook automatic replies or a calendar event marked Out of office.
Busy or In a meetingCurrent calls and calendar events; this is not the Away state.
Away after leaving the phone appMobile background behavior.

2. Check your manually selected status

Select your profile picture at the top right of Teams, then select your current status. If it shows Away or Be right back, choose Available, or choose Reset status to hand control back to Teams. A manual status without a duration lasts 7 days, so an Away you set last week can still be active (Microsoft's status instructions).

If the dot is purple, Teams is showing Out of office. Turn off automatic replies in Outlook, or check your calendar for an event marked Out of office.

Setting a duration on Available will not keep you green through idle, sleep or lock. Teams only lets you choose a status less available than the one it calculates. A custom status message can say you are reachable, but it does not change the dot.

3. Check the device state and other sessions

Note whether the computer locked, slept or lost its connection when your status changed. Changing a sleep timer only fixes sleep, not every presence problem.

Check whether Teams is also open on your phone, in a browser or on another computer. When you are signed in on several devices, the one you used most recently sets your status, so a phone with Teams in the background can show you Away. Close the other sessions and test one active device at a time.

4. If the status is stuck, check the connection

Try these in order, checking your status from another account after each one:

  1. Quit and reopen Teams. Closing the window is not enough: right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar or dock and select Quit.
  2. Update Teams. Select Settings and more (…) > Check for updates.
  3. Sign out and back in. Select your profile picture, then Sign out. This creates a fresh presence connection.
  4. Compare with the web client. Sign in at teams.microsoft.com. If your status is right there, the problem is limited to the desktop app.
  5. Reset the app or clear its cache. On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select … next to Microsoft Teams, then Advanced options > Reset. This removes your Teams personalization. For Mac, follow Microsoft's cache-clearing steps. Clearing the cache also deletes diagnostic logs, so ask IT first if they are already looking into the problem.

If a work account still shows the wrong status while you actively use it, send IT the client, time and what you saw. Microsoft's incorrect-presence troubleshooting guide covers the administrator diagnostics.

5. Decide whether you need a fix or a scheduled presence service

A presence tool will not fix a broken connection. But if your status is right while you work and only goes Away during quiet work, Teams is behaving as designed. The fix depends on what you need: a computer that stays awake and sees input, an open phone app, or a cloud service that works with your laptop closed.

Our comparison of ways to keep Microsoft Teams active and green explains built-in settings, input tools and cloud services, including their device requirements.

Common questions

Why do messages still arrive when I am Away?

Presence describes your displayed availability; it is not the same as being unable to receive messages. Notification delivery does not prove that your status is Available.

Will leaving Teams open stop Away?

Not by itself. An open window can still be on an idle, locked or sleeping device. Check the conditions under which your status changes instead of assuming an open app is enough.

Can NotAway fix this now?

NotAway's Microsoft Teams support is in development. You can join the waitlist for launch news and a first-month-free offer. We'll share supported account types before activation; we are not currently offering a working Teams connection.
