IdlePilot Alternative: IdlePilot vs NotAway Compared

Published 2026-10-21 · Updated 2026-10-21 · 5 min read

The short answer: IdlePilot and NotAway do the same core job. Both hold your Slack or Microsoft Teams presence from the cloud on a schedule, so your laptop can be closed. The choice comes down to how many accounts you need. IdlePilot covers one account at a time and costs less. NotAway covers up to seven Slack workspaces and Teams accounts at once.

NotAway is our product, so this page sticks to what IdlePilot publishes on its own site as of October 21, 2026, and says plainly where IdlePilot is the better buy.

What IdlePilot does well

IdlePilot is cheaper on both plans: $9 a month or $60 a year. Its schedule is more flexible than ours, with different hours for each day, a lunch break and a vacation mode. The trial needs no card. IdlePilot also states clearly what it doesn't do: it sets presence only, doesn't write status messages and doesn't read your chats or files.

If you have one Slack workspace or one Teams account and want split hours or a lunch break, IdlePilot is the better fit.

Where NotAway is different

IdlePilot's plan covers one Slack workspace or one Teams account at a time. Switching accounts stops the old link, and you can't connect both platforms at once. That's fine for one employer. It doesn't work for a contractor in three client Slacks, or for someone whose company uses Teams while a client uses Slack.

NotAway connects up to seven accounts on one plan, Slack and Teams together, all on the same schedule. When a connection's credentials expire, the dashboard shows it and NotAway emails you, so a dropped workspace doesn't fail silently. Teams connections may need reconnecting as often as daily. If you mainly need Teams, test that during the trial.

If you only need one account, see how NotAway can keep Slack active or keep Microsoft Teams active and compare it with IdlePilot on price alone.

Setup on both

Both need a desktop browser for the first connection. IdlePilot links through its Chrome extension. NotAway uses a connection extension or a manual token step. Neither can be fully set up from a phone. After setup, the laptop can be closed with either service, and the Slack green dot follows your schedule instead of your mouse. If you only see the occasional Slack away status while you work, a free local fix may be enough and you need neither.

Choosing

  • Choose IdlePilot if you have one Slack workspace or one Teams account, want the lower price, or need per-day hours and a lunch break.
  • Choose NotAway if you have more than one account, use Slack and Teams at the same time, or want an email when a connection breaks. Plans start at $9.99/month with a 7-day free trial.
